Showing off our Progress and looking to the future
On Sunday, June 11, 2017, Greater Erie Alliance for Equality held a rally entitled Progress Toward Equality. This educational event celebrated the gains we have made and highlighting the work that still needs to be done for the LGBT community. This was organized in conjunction with similar events in Washington DC and across the US, namely the Interpride organization. GEAE hopes to continue this event in the years to come and as more protections are put into place, especially at the local level.
About 50-60 people attended this event, including local TV coverage from WJET TV 24. The event featured a presentation of a timeline on local, state, and national progress on LGBT Equality. The timeline used the Stonewall riots of June 29, 1969, as a significant starting point. We also created a large banner with the slogan “This is what Equality looks like” with messages, names, and handprints from those at the rally. This banner will be on display for the coming with opportunities for other people to add their mark at future events.
